ESCHER MUSEUM

Tucked in a side street in Den Haag is the small but delightful museum dedicated to the dutch graphic artist Maurits Cornelis Escher, housed in a former Royal Palace.

Escher is renowned worldwide for his incredibly detailed images which he drew with mathmatical precision. Unique perspectives depicting the impossible and the infinite, which have furnished many a student wall as litho reproductions.

Last Autumn I visited the Escher in Het Paleis Museum for the first time.Seeing his originals
was a revelation, much in the same way as when I first viewed a Van Gogh. No amount of exposure to printed images or internet postings can prepare you for the experience of seeing a great artists original work close up. I was awestruck!

Het Paleis also features beautiful sculptures by Hans van Bentem designed in 2003.These take the form of surreal chandeliers depicting objects such as an umbrella,a fish and a fantastic skull and crossbones. Below are the links but as I always recommend, make the pilgrimage for the real experience.
