Leslie Weiner has resurfaced again. One time collaborater with Kevin Mooney in Max.

"Purity Supreme is a collaboration between French musician, composer and producer Christophe Van Huffel and American writer, musician and composer Leslie Winer. "Always Already" was recorded in France at Studio7Love in May 2011."

Available as a limited edition vinyl ep ,the four tracks can also be downloaded via Amazon etc.

I met and photographed Ms Weiner (AKA Leslie Winer) back in the late 80s. She was heavily influenced by William Burroughs and was friendly with Jean-Michel Basquiat. These influences could be seen and heard in her collaborations with Max and in her own solo work.

The Recontres D'Arles as always was truly inspirational. Excellent curation presenting some amazing exhibitions. 60 in total. All housed in exceptional spaces. Arles is a beautiful town with architecture dating back to Roman times. It has an aura of antiquity and culture. Perhaps thats why Van Gogh was so drawn to it.

You know how it is, somebody you know mentions a band and you make a subconscious note to check them out,not quite sure whether the are going to be over-hyped or not. It was a pleasant surprise then to find that Screama Ballerina completely exceeded my expectations. Not since I clapped eyes on the Vipersuzas had I got this excited about a "punk" band. Their energy live is nuclear.

They are fronted by the exuberant Charlie O'Connor, whose onstage persona is so similar to Poly Styrenes' its eerie. Teenage hearthrob Richie Jay thrashes out tight cord changes on guitar. Swarthy cavelero Ciaran McAvoy pumps out the bass lines ,with the lithesome Ben Miller on drums, completing the tighter than tight rhythm section. Check em out on facebook but for the real deal go check em out live, they are sure to be playing a town near you soon.

Unusually for an artist Dan has got his act together selling Screenprints,Giclees and T shirts on his website. Another excellent line up of acts at Saturdays leg of the Outside Inside Festival. So many acts spread over so many venues.I only managed a few including Aloosh, Amys' Ghost and Screama Ballerina. Martin Creed delivered an excellent set of quirky songs, some consisted of singing the alphabet, the numbers one to a hundred and a list of colours. Performance art with humour that at times matched the energy and wit of early Wire shows. Love It

Based in Liverpool, Gary Mcgarvey works under the name Horse and has an amazing array of limited edition gig posters for sale on his site. He is becoming ever more popular as a designer and I'm guessing most of the work now available will be highly collectable in years to come. I have just been offered an exhibition space to show off some of the many music portraits I've taken over the last 30 years. Scanning through some of my old negs its become apparent that behind every image there is a story. Ive had the opportunity to shoot some amazingly talented musicians and every shot came about as the result of an interaction that has an ongoing resonance.

Afrika Baambaataa was great company, Malcolm McLaren was truly inspirational, despite his reputation as an arch manipulator,Kula Shaker,The Fugees,Oasis,Jamiroquai,John Lydon,The Spice Girls,all these encounters transcend the 125th of a second it took to record each shot. The challenge now is how to relate all that in an artists statement. Hmmm where an earth do I begin?

Sad to hear today of the death of Poly Styrene from Xray Spex. I was lucky enough to see them play the original Marquee in Wardour street back in December 1977. Probably one of the most accomplished punk bands with an infectious attitude. As they launched into Oh Bondage there was a massive stage invasion. An electric performance that changed my life. Thanks for the memory.

Back in the days when I briefly had an art gallery in Henley,one of the many talented artists I managed to show was Richard Forgan, a man who has elevated his woodturning to fine art.

Woodturning has been a woodworking craft since ancient times. The Egyptians perfected a technique way back in 1300 BC developing a basic lathe to cut the rotating wood.

Richard has developed this skill with a lathe and also carves and burns the wood to create some amazing pieces,made with absolute precision.

Angelique Houtkamp is a Dutch Tattoo artist who also produces beautiful fine art drawings and prints.Her work could be described as Art Deco beauty with a contemporary twist, heavily influenced by the classic old school tattoo imagery that originated in New York.

Sad indeed to hear of the demise of the British composer John Barry. His catalogue of soundtracks is astounding, having worked on so many brilliant movies including Midnight Cowboy, 11 James Bond films,Born Free,Out of Africa,The Ipcress File and Dances with Wolves.

Back in the late nineties he released a compilation for Sony Music and I was enlisted by PR Gary Farrow to do a shot to feed out to the Music Press.

Gary being Gary, a James Bond themed photo was decided upon and I was despatched to Bapty's to hire a suitable firearm complete with silencer.

We arrived at John Barrys' Knightsbridge house one lunchtime and he ushered us into his drawing room hung with exquisite medieval tapestry. He offered us fine red wine and was eager to play Gary a recording he had just finished. It was The Beyondness of Things and I was enthralled.As we listened he explained how one particular track was an autobiographical piece that was inspired by a memory of walking hand in hand with his mother when he was a small child. I have a lump in my throat everytime I hear it now.

Time passed and we took the Promo shot we had planned. Job done we sallied off back to the real world. However I will never forget the brief time I spent in the company of such a modest and charming genius. God Bless you John. RIP.

Any of those of you who have experimented with infra red photography on film will know what a laborious process it all was. Film had to be loaded and developed in total darkness. Due to the fact infra red is not part of the visible spectrum,exposures where always difficult to judge.

Thankfully the digital age has made this technique a much simpler operation. One option is to buy an infra red filter such as the Hoya RM-72,which blocks wavelengths from the visible spectrum and allows infra red wavelengths through. This does however require patience and a tripod as exposures can be very long.

The other option is to adapt an existing camera or buy one that has already been adapted.
Most digital cameras are already capable of photographing in infra red but manufacturers use a filter on the sensor to block most of the IR light to improve the quality of the visible light being recorded.

There are a number of companies that sell or will adapt cameras modified to shoot infra red by permanently removing the IR filter. This means modified cameras can capture IR as easily as capturing visible light, no long exposures or special filters needed. Cameras that have been altered in this way however can no longer be used for "normal" photographs. I have an adapted Nikon D80 which I use with a 12-24 zoom. Great for eerie architectural shots and band photos.

I was told recently an adapted 5D Mark 2 had been used to shoot a low budget horror movie,imagine trying to shoot that on film!

Every once in a while, you realize you are working on something really special....

I knew it when I got involved with Malcolm McLarens' Waltz Darling project,I knew it when I covered Rage Against the Machines' first UK visit,I knew it when I took pictures on The Manic Street Preachers first tour....

I felt the same way when I was lucky enough to be given the task of shooting stills on Martin Goochs' new movie!

I'm not giving much away but having read the last page of script, I know there won't be a dry eye in the house when the movie gets to be screened.A terrific cast and a terrific crew. If you have an iota of sensibility of what it means to love and lose,this movie will undoubtedly entertain enlighten & resolve. From now on,everytime I see a yellow Bi Plane,I'll think of my dear ole Dad. ...

Tucked in a side street in Den Haag is the small but delightful museum dedicated to the dutch graphic artist Maurits Cornelis Escher, housed in a former Royal Palace.

Escher is renowned worldwide for his incredibly detailed images which he drew with mathmatical precision. Unique perspectives depicting the impossible and the infinite,which have furnished many a student wall as litho reproductions.

Last Autumn I visited the Escher in Het Paleis Museum for the first time.Seeing his originals
was a revelation,much in the same way as when I first viewed a Van Gogh. No amount of exposure to printed images or internet postings can prepare you for the experience of seeing a great artists original work close up. I was awestruck!

Het Paleis also features beautiful sculptures by Hans van Bentem designed in 2003.These take the form of surreal chandeliers depicting objects such as an umbrella,a fish and a fantastic skull and crossbones. Below are the links but as I always recommend,make the pilgrimage for the real experience.

2011 TOUR DATES
Following a series of low key (and not so low key) performances culminating in 3 "exclusive, sold out weeks in advance" nights in intimate venues (Quietus curated, NME gig of the week at the Lexington, London & Audioscope Festival in Oxford) Wire's core trio of Colin Newman, Graham Lewis & Robert Grey augmented by new live guitarist Matt Simms will be bringing their brand of what Clash calls, "musical history in the making" to a bigger audience in support of their forthcoming album "Red Barked Tree" (Jan 10th 2011). During the first 4 months of 2011 the band will play in 16 countries on 3 continents kicking off with an album launch at The Rough Trade East Store and finishing at a location in North America we cannot for the moment reveal...

Some exciting news just in.Long time friend and talented photographer Nigel Law has just secured new premises for the business he and his wife run,Savannah Canoe & Kayak (See link below). As well as selling all the best canoe and kayaking equipment it will also house a dedicated gallery space.

Nigel and I go way back, we were both born in Greater London but both grew up on the South Coast. Myself in Lymington,Nigel in Bournemouth. We both studied photography at Art College.Nigel at Bournemouth Art College and myself at Salisbury College of Art. We both wound up back in London taking pictures. Nigel worked for iD Magazine and shot bands(See Flowered Ups' Iconic sleeve). I worked for the BBC ,shot bands and joined Sony Music.

In the early Nineties,Nigel got increasingly bored with the nepotism, wanabees and hangers on that seemed to gravitate towards the London arts scene. He bought a mountain bike a tent and a trailer and cycled across the New World in search of a meaningful future....He has never looked back.

Now,along with his lovely wife Kristin ,he is a well respected Surf Kayak Instructor and Tour Operator. They have paddled the length of The Mississippi River,The Gulf Coast and recently returned from a 250 mile Kayak trip along the Ganges. Keep checking their website for new and interesting items but best of all if you are down Savannah way, book a tour and visit the store. You wont regret it!

Tempus Fugit as my dear old Dad used to say and so it has! Last year was very good as far as commissions were concerned. Most of my output was commercial work on digital formats.

As an antidote to all that I attended a 1 day course at St Pauls Darkrooms, Bristol, learning two old printing techniques ie Cyanotypes and Salt Printing.

Thoroughly inspired by Cyanotypes,one of my new years resolutions is to produce a body of work using this technique. The other is to finally consolidate the project I undertook back in the early nineties documenting the shenanigans at Kinky Gerlinky. A book is planned so lets hope a publisher will be feeling brave and back me on the project...watch this space.

With that I bid a fond farewell to 2010. Lets hope 2011 is just as much fun.

PETER MURPHY - MUSIC LEGENDS

Educated at Jacob Kramer College of Art and the University of East London. Peter Murphy Trained with iconographer Guillem Ramos Poqui in London. Murphy uses traditional techniques from medieval religious painting, including egg tempera paint and gold leaf.

He formed a Broadstairs Stuckist group in 2005 and has exhibited often with the group. His work is exquisite & his Music Icons are astounding. Below is a snippet from his website. He also runs workshops. Browse his site for a truly inspiring experience.

"In recent years, inspired by Russian ‘Parsuna’ icons, such as the famous icon of the infamous Tsar Ivan IV, I have been making iconic portraits of my musical heroes, those who have engaged, inspired and enraptured me over the years, including Elvis, Bob Marley, Jimi Hendrix and naturally for someone raised in Liverpool in the 1960’s, The Beatles.

Some of the images have the appearance of medieval Russian icons, with a highly stylised appearance and ornate pseudo- Cyrillic inscriptions. Others seem more akin to early or pre-Renaissance Tuscan altarpieces, with richly ornate stamped and tooled gilding, bright jewel like tempera colours and a more naturalistic modelling of clothing and features.

These images are not intended to be regarded as icons in the true liturgical sense of the word, but neither are they simplistic or ironic post modern comments on the current conflation in the media of the words ‘icon’ and ‘celebrity’. These images are painted in the light of my personal faith and the Orthodox Church’s belief that we each bear within us the true image of God; we are each made in his image and likeness, no matter how far we stray, no matter how tarnished our halo, or tattered our wings."
